from head to toe…

What to expect from your consultation with a physiotherapist

Your physiotherapist is a health professional who will help you establish and maintain a healthy active lifestyle.

Your physiotherapist will work with you to achieve this, and wants to know what is causing you difficulties and concerns. It is a good idea to write down any points or questions beforehand so you don't forget.

Initial visit

Your first appointment may last half an hour to an hour, because the physiotherapist will take a thorough medical history, assess your needs and discuss your goals for treatment. This information will help the physiotherapist to design an individualised treatment programme. Your physiotherapist will then explain your treatment, expected results, how long it will take and how much it will cost, and seek your agreement before proceeding.

  • Wear clothes that you?ll be comfortable to move in.
  • You are welcome to bring support with you (a family member, or friend).
  • Bring along any other important information, such as a referral letter from your doctor, or X-rays if you have these.

Subsequent visits may take half an hour to an hour.

What treatment should you expect?

Physiotherapists use a variety of treatments. These may include:

  • Exercise programmes
  • Manipulation and mobilisation
  • Lifestyle advice
  • Education to prevent future injury
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
  • Hydrotherapy

If you don't understand a procedure or exercise ask your physiotherapist to explain it again or to demonstrate it.

Your physiotherapist may provide you with written instructions and diagrams of exercises to continue with at home.

If you have any side effects from your treatment, please let your physiotherapist know immediately.

If you have any changes to your medical or general condition during your course of treatment, such as pregnancy, illness or prescribed drugs, make sure you tell your physiotherapist.
